(INDIANAPOLIS) – A new bill will allow the State of Indiana to collect tolls on interstate highways.
Governor Mike Braun recently signed House Bill 1461, which would give the Indiana Department of Transportation permission to request waivers from the Federal Highway Administration to implement tolls on any interstate highway, without requiring additional legislative approval.
Indiana Republicans who introduced the bill say the measure was created and enacted because of slacking revenues from gas taxes, which have been used over the years to help fund new road construction and maintenance in the Hoosier State.
Some Indiana lawmakers have said that the gas tax is not a practical way to fund roads anymore, and that all options have to be looked at.
According to the news service Axios, a recent study suggests that tolling Indiana interstates could bring in $40 billion in revenue over the next twenty years.
With increased fuel efficiency in automobiles, and more electric and hybrid vehicles being used, many states are looking at how to figure out how to maintain their roads with less gas tax money coming in.
There’s been no word on when this new tolling practice will begin.
