(LANSING) – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel says no charges will be filed against Michigan State Police Troopers in a fatal shooting.
Nessel says her office has concluded their review of the officer involved shooting death of 34 year old Eric Fiddler of Jonesville on June 27 of 2024. She says the Troopers that were involved, acted in self defense and in defense of their fellow officers.
On the afternoon of June 27th, 2024, Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Deputy William Butler conducted a traffic stop on Beecher Road in Jonesville, during which vehicle passenger Eric Fiddler shot and murdered Butler, then fled on foot. Six troopers with the MSP Emergency Support Team were dispatched to track and apprehend Fiddler. They were accompanied by two MSP K-9 officers and an MSP Sergeant and Trooper with the Region of Irish Hills Narcotics Office.
An individual called 9-1-1 to report a sighting of Fiddler near Osseo Road and North Street. Soon thereafter, law enforcement spotted the suspect retreating into a wooded area and followed him. A K9 indicated Fiddler was in a shed, and a trooper three times issued commands for Fiddler to come out, but found the shed empty when they entered it.
A short time later, a trooper saw Fiddler laying behind a short, cement foundational wall near the shed, and ordered him to show his hands. Fiddler shot at the trooper and all six members of the EST returned fire, killing Fiddler.
Fiddler was pronounced dead at the scene. Toxicology testing on Fiddler’s blood revealed an extremely high level of methamphetamines.
