Not Street Legal: Indiana BMV’s Most Rejected Plate Requests

(INDIANAPOLIS) - If you were hoping to cruise Indiana highways with plates reading "HOCKTUA," "DIDDY," or "FART CAR," the state has some bad news.

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles has released its list of personalized license plates rejected so far in 2025, and it's a mix of slang, jokes, political jabs, and outright profanity that never made it past reviewers.

Between Jan. 1 and Dec. 18, the BMV denied more than 700 personalized plate requests. Among those turned away: "POOPY," "NARDS," "BATMN AF," "STAYL1T," "DUCK NO," "AHHHHH," and even the deceptively simple "I69."

BMV officials say requests are screened to ensure they don't include profanity, references to illegal activity, slurs, or messages that could be considered offensive or inappropriate.

One of the biggest trends among rejected plates this year was drug references, with attempts like "QUALUDE," "GOCAINE," "KOKANE," "SNOW420," "CR4CK," and "SHRO0MZ" all denied.

Indiana pride -- and rivalry -- also made the list. Plates such as "FPGOIU," "IUSUX1," and "IU AF" were rejected, joining the long tradition of college sports trash talk that doesn't quite translate to license plates.

Political messages were another common reason for denial. Requests like "H8LIBS," "NOTRMP," and "POTUS45" were among those blocked, reflecting how election-season sentiments continue to spill over into everyday life -- even onto bumpers.

The rejected list continues a yearly tradition of eyebrow-raising entries. In past years, plates like "ON METH," "TRK NUTS," and "I C BUTS" also failed to make the cut.

Drivers interested in creating a personalized plate can find guidelines and restrictions on the BMV's website -- which might help avoid seeing their clever idea end up on next year's rejection list.
