AST LANSING, Mich. (WLKI)- Michigan State University's Interfraternity Council canceled all in-person fraternity recruitment activities Thursday evening following the death of an IFC member.
The council announced the change on social media, saying the decision was made out of respect for the student, to support the fraternity community and to maintain consistency during the recruitment process.
The student's identity, fraternity chapter affiliation and cause of death have not been released. Michigan State University also has not provided additional information about the death.
Under the council's announcement, chapters were allowed to extend bids to potential new members by phone beginning at 10 p.m. However, potential new members were not permitted to attend any chapter events Thursday evening.
Recruitment headquarters in the Lake Ontario room of the MSU Union remained open for students with questions about registration or eligibility.
The Interfraternity Council extended condolences to the student's family, friends and others affected by the death.
