LANSING, Mich. (WLKI) - Michigan is investing more than $200,000 in research aimed at improving college outcomes for community college students who transfer to four-year institutions.
A recent analysis found that more than 38 percent of community college students in Michigan who transfer to a four-year school do not earn a degree within six years.
The analysis also found that students who complete degrees often earn more college credits than are required.
The Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement and Potential is funding research projects at the University of Michigan, Oakland University and nonprofit research organization ITHAKA S+R.
The projects will examine student pathways between community colleges and universities and identify ways to improve the transfer process, reduce unnecessary barriers and help students complete degrees more efficiently.
State education officials say smoother credit transfers could improve graduation rates and education and career outcomes for students.
