(INDIANAPOLIS) - Lake, river and watershed projects in Steuben, LaGrange and Noble counties are among 21 projects receiving nearly $1.3 million through Indiana's Lake and River Enhancement program.
Governor Mike Braun and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources announced $1,297,500 in grants for projects involving lakes, rivers, streams and watershed land treatment.
The projects will benefit four lakes and 15 rivers and streams. Some projects will benefit more than one lake. Two land-based projects involving watershed treatment practices also will be funded in coordination with local Soil and Water Conservation Districts.
Many of the projects are intended to improve water quality by reducing sediment and nutrients entering waterways. The DNR says those improvements can support fish and wildlife populations and recreational use.
The grants are funded through the annual LARE fee paid by boat owners when they register their watercraft with the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Local sponsors must provide at least 20% of each project's cost.
Grants are awarded competitively and are intended to help local organizations complete projects they may not be able to fund on their own.
