(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana students will face tighter restrictions on cell phones and other personal electronic devices when a new statewide law takes effect July 1.
Senate Enrolled Act 78 requires public schools and charter schools to limit student use of personal communication devices throughout the entire school day, expanding existing classroom restrictions.
The law applies to cell phones, smart watches and other personal electronic devices covered by local school policies.
Under the new requirements, students will be prohibited from using personal devices during class, lunch periods, passing periods and other portions of the regular school day unless an exception applies under district policy.
Supporters of the law say the changes are intended to reduce distractions and improve student focus and academic performance.
School districts across Indiana are updating student handbooks and preparing enforcement procedures ahead of the 2026-27 school year.
While the statewide law takes effect July 1, individual districts will establish specific rules regarding how devices are stored, when exceptions may be allowed and what disciplinary measures will be used for violations.
School officials are encouraging families to review updated policies before students return to class this fall.
