(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana residents can fish without a license this weekend during the state's annual Free Fishing Weekend.

The event takes place Saturday and Sunday, June 6 and 7, allowing residents to fish Indiana's public waters without purchasing a fishing license or trout and salmon stamp.

Children ages 17 and younger already may fish without a license throughout the year, but the weekend gives adults the same opportunity at no cost.

State officials say the event is designed to introduce more people to fishing and encourage families and friends to spend time outdoors together.

Special events, fishing workshops, educational programs and fishing derbies are planned at locations around the state.

While license requirements are waived, all other fishing regulations remain in effect. Anglers must continue to follow established seasons, bag limits and size restrictions.

Additional information, including fishing locations and event listings, is available at IN.gov/freefish.
