(FORT WAYNE) - Indiana Michigan Power is reminding customers to be alert for phone and in-person utility scams after receiving more than 75 scam reports during the past month.

The utility says scammers have recently been impersonating company employees and showing up at homes threatening immediate disconnection of service.

Indiana Michigan Power says legitimate employees will never demand immediate payment through prepaid debit cards, gift cards or third-party mobile payment apps.

The company also says customers with past-due bills receive multiple notices and payment plan options before any service interruption takes place.

Officials say company employees will always wear official uniforms, drive company vehicles and carry identification cards.

Indiana Michigan Power also warns customers that the company never calls, texts or emails asking for personal or financial information related to refunds or overpayments.

Customers can report suspected scams by calling 1-800-311-4634.

Account information is also available through the Indiana Michigan Power mobile app and the company website.
