(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana high school athletes will soon be allowed to make money from personal branding activities under new rules approved last week by the Indiana High School Athletic Association.

The IHSAA Board of Directors approved the change in a 13-5 vote.

The new policy allows student athletes to profit from their personal brand while maintaining amateur status. The rule takes effect during the 2026-2027 school year.

Indiana's rules share similarities with college Name, Image and Likeness policies, but high school athletes will not be allowed to use school names, logos, uniforms, or school affiliations in promotional activities.

The policy allows athletes to earn money through social media activity, endorsements, personal appearances, and other branding opportunities unrelated to school athletic participation.

Supporters say the rule change gives student athletes new opportunities while also creating added responsibilities involving contracts, finances, and compliance with IHSAA guidelines.
