(STATEWIDE) - Federal health officials are warning about a salmonella outbreak that includes cases in Indiana and is affecting a high number of children.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says at least 34 people in 13 states have been infected with the same strain of salmonella linked to backyard poultry, including chickens and ducks.

Thirteen people have been hospitalized, and more than 40 percent of those sick are children under the age of five.

Investigators say many of the cases involve people who had direct contact with backyard birds or their environment.

Health officials are also raising concern because some of the infections show resistance to commonly used antibiotics, which can make treatment more difficult.

The CDC says backyard poultry can carry salmonella even if the animals appear healthy. Officials are urging people to wash their hands after handling birds, keep them out of the home, and avoid close contact--especially for young children.

No deaths have been reported, but the CDC says additional cases may still be identified as the investigation continues.
