(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indiana State Police detective is being recognized for actions during a shooting incident in Steuben County.

Master Trooper Detective Andy Smith received the Combat Action Award during the department's annual awards ceremony.

State Police say the award stems from an April 29, 2004 incident on U.S. 20 near 4305 West, outside Angola.

Smith and now-retired Trooper Kerry Ghent responded to a report of a man with a gun. Authorities say Smith observed the suspect carrying a long gun along the roadway.

As Smith passed, the suspect pointed the weapon at the patrol car and fired, striking the vehicle.

Police say Smith turned around and confronted the suspect, giving commands to drop the weapon. Ghent arrived and also issued commands.

Authorities say the suspect did not comply and made aggressive movements toward troopers. Smith and Ghent fired, injuring the suspect.

After medical treatment and time at Logansport State Hospital, the suspect was convicted on four counts of attempted murder.
