(ANGOLA) - Steuben County is considering a plan to expand its WIC program by merging with LaGrange County.

The proposal would create a regional program based in Steuben County, with LaGrange County operating as a satellite location.

Health officials told commissioners the idea is being driven by the state, which is pushing for larger programs. LaGrange County currently serves between 300 and 400 clients, while Steuben County's caseload is more than 1,200.

Under the plan, LaGrange County's program would be absorbed into Steuben County's operation, with services continuing in both areas.

Commissioners raised questions about how the program would be structured, how employees would be handled, and how costs would be covered.

"Let's see what that structure is going to look like," said Board of Commissioners President Wil Howard.

No decision was made Tuesday. Officials say more details are needed, and the proposal is expected to return for further discussion as budget deadlines approach.
