(INDIANA) - Communities across the state are marking Child Abuse Prevention Month with the planting of blue pinwheels, a national symbol of safe and healthy childhoods.

Pinwheel displays were set out Friday in multiple counties, including Steuben, DeKalb, LaGrange, Noble and Whitley, as local agencies and residents joined the annual awareness effort.

Organizers say the displays are meant to keep the focus on preventing child abuse and neglect through community support, early intervention and family resources.

Iris Family Support Center CEO Dee Szyndrowski said prevention depends on strong partnerships and shared responsibility across communities.

Additional Child Abuse Prevention Month activities are also planned throughout April, including pinwheel crafts, coloring pages and awareness displays at public library branches.

The blue pinwheel campaign is held nationwide each April as a reminder of the importance of building safe, stable and supportive environments for children.
