NIPSCO Customers Push Back On Rising Bills At Elkhart County Session

(GOSHEN) - Frustration over rising NIPSCO utility bills continues to build in northern Indiana, with customers sounding off during the latest Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission listening session in Elkhart County.

Dozens of residents told regulators their monthly bills have climbed sharply, with some saying their costs have nearly doubled.

A major point of concern was the size of delivery charges, with customers asking for clearer explanations about where those costs are coming from.

State Senator Blake Doriot told the crowd his own bill increased from about $290 to $450, reflecting the broader concern heard throughout the meeting.

In response, NIPSCO says it does not independently raise rates, noting that as a regulated utility all rate filings must go before the IURC through what it calls a transparent regulatory process.

The company says that process includes review by the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor and outside community groups acting to protect customers.

The Elkhart County meeting marked the third listening session in the IURC's affordability review, with seven more public sessions still planned before a final report is expected in May or June.
