(LANSING) - Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has activated the State Emergency Operations Center as a powerful storm system moves across the state.

Whitmer said the activation is intended to ensure coordination ahead of potential weather-related impacts expected over the next 24 to 36 hours.

Blizzard conditions are forecast in parts of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, while southern portions of the state could see severe weather including thunderstorms and possible tornadoes.

State officials say the operations center will monitor conditions and coordinate resources if local communities need assistance.
