(INDIANAPOLIS) - A new training initiative is aimed at improving access to benefits for Indiana veterans.

The Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs has announced a partnership with the American Legion that will require County Veteran Service Officers to complete updated training that meets state accreditation standards.

Officials say officers who complete the program will receive full accreditation through the American Legion.

State leaders say the goal is to ensure veterans filing benefits claims receive consistent and professional guidance, no matter where they live.

The training program is designed to standardize how County Veteran Service Officers assist with claims and help reduce delays or errors in the process.

The initiative will also include continuing education to ensure officers stay current on federal and state veterans benefits programs.

Officials say the effort is part of broader plans to improve access to services and ensure Hoosier veterans receive accurate and timely assistance when filing claims.
