(WASHINGTON, D.C.) -- Michigan will receive additional federal funding to continue recovery from last year's devastating northern Michigan ice storm.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer met with President Donald Trump at the White House this week and secured a commitment for more disaster assistance. Whitmer's office says the exact amount has not yet been finalized.

The White House had previously pledged at least $50 million in federal aid last July to help communities rebuild after the storm caused widespread damage to power lines, roads and homes.

During the meeting, Whitmer also updated the president on the four deadly tornadoes that struck southwest Michigan last week, which caused additional damage and loss of life in the region.

State officials say recovery efforts from both disasters remain ongoing.
