(ANGOLA) - Residents will have another opportunity to weigh in on a proposed joint fire territory between the City of Angola and Pleasant Township, with the final public meeting now scheduled for 6 p.m. on March 10.
Several people who attended earlier meetings criticized the original scheduled starting times of 4 p.m., saying many residents would be unable to attend meetings during regular business hours.
The proposal would replace Pleasant Township's current contract with the City of Angola for fire protection with a formal fire territory governed jointly by the city and township.
Supporters say the change would help address rising call volumes, declining volunteer staffing, and long-term funding challenges while improving response times in parts of the township.
Fire Chief Bill Harter says the plan could eventually include staffing a second fire station at the Pleasant Township building, reducing response times in some areas from more than 13 minutes to as little as five to nine minutes.
The proposal has drawn strong criticism from some residents, particularly over projected tax increases.
Financial projections show city property owners could see about a one percent increase, while Pleasant Township property owners could face increases closer to 20 percent depending on property values.
Several residents have argued township taxpayers would shoulder a larger share of the cost despite fewer emergency calls compared to the city.
Others have called for delaying the decision, noting the current fire protection contract runs through 2030 and suggesting officials explore other funding options.
The March 10th meeting will be the final opportunity for public questions and comments before a vote.
A final decision on the fire territory proposal could come as early as March 23rd, when both the Angola City Council and Pleasant Township board must approve the agreement for it to take effect.
