(COLDWATER) - The Coldwater City Council has introduced an ordinance to update fire code regulations for the growing number of food trucks operating in the city.

Fire Chief Dave Schmaltz says the changes would allow the fire department to better track inspections using a third-party software platform already in use by a regional consortium of fire inspectors across southwest Michigan and the Detroit area.

Under the system, food trucks inspected in any participating municipality would have their safety compliance recognized by Coldwater officials, reducing duplicate inspections while maintaining standards.

City Attorney Amanda O'Boyle says the goal is to ensure food trucks are safe for both customers and vendors.

Schmaltz noted the city does not plan to charge inspection fees, but the software provider currently assesses a $25 annual fee.

The City Council is expected to take formal action on the ordinance at its March 9 meeting.
