(LANSING) - Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has signed legislation prohibiting students from using cellphones during classroom instructional time.

The new law is intended to reduce distractions, increase student engagement and improve academic performance in schools statewide.

Under the measure, students may not use cellphones during instructional periods. However, phones will still be permitted between classes, for documented medical purposes and during emergencies.

State officials said the legislation is part of a broader effort to strengthen classroom focus and learning outcomes.

School districts are expected to provide additional guidance as they update local policies to comply with the new law.
