(LAGRANGE COUNTY) -- Indiana State Police say new tips are bringing fresh momentum to a nearly 60-year-old cold case involving the death of an Amish teenager in LaGrange County.

According to reporting from WANE-TV, investigators with the ISP Cold Case Unit have received a surge of information after recently renewing a public call for help in the March 22, 1969 killing of 17-year-old Mervin Lehman.

Detective Jake Quick reports multiple people have now come forward with information about the night Lehman was killed, and investigators have identified potential suspects.

Lehman was riding in a horse-drawn buggy with his nephew on a rural road when someone in a passing vehicle threw a large rock, striking him. The buggy made it home, but Lehman later died at the hospital. Around the same time, a similar attack involving a chunk of asphalt injured occupants of another buggy nearby.

Quick said incidents like these were not uncommon during that era and noted similarities to other cases from the late 1960s.

Investigators say some family members have long believed they know who was responsible but were sworn to secrecy. While several relatives have since died, ISP says it is now working to earn the trust of surviving family members who may hold critical information.

Police say tips are still being accepted as the investigation continues.
