(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana is canceling and postponing road and bridge projects at a growing pace, as transportation officials warn lawmakers that funding constraints are forcing tough decisions across the state.
The Indiana Capital Chronicle reports the Indiana Department of Transportation has now halted more than 300 projects, a figure that has continued to climb over the past year, according to agency officials who testified Monday before the House Roads and Transportation Committee.
To address funding gaps, INDOT is exploring road tolls as a potential revenue source. Federal law generally prohibits tolls on interstate highways, though limited exceptions and pilot programs exist.
Late last year, INDOT officials submitted a tolling application to the Federal Highway Administration for Interstate 70.
Gov. Mike Braun has previously said tolling could help Indiana collect revenue from out-of-state drivers who pass through without buying fuel.
