Trine Men's Volleyball Defeats Olivet In Three Sets

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's volleyball was efficient in their three-set win over The University of Olivet on Friday night It was the fifth-best kill percentage in program history at .429 on the night. Ted Hofmeister had kills on 13 of his 16 swings for a percentage of .812.

Hofmeister's 13 kills led the team and Kevin Boncaro added 12. Both had double-doubles with Boncaro leading the way with 15 digs. Nick Woolley recorded 10 digs as well as 34 of the squad's 38 assists. Trine moves to 15-5 overall and 5-1 in Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL) play. Olivet drops to 5-22 and 0-6 in conference action.

The Thunder pulled away for a 25-9 win in set one thanks to 11 errors and a negative hitting percentage for the Comets. Seven straight points for Trine made the score 10-4 in the early goings and 12 of the last 14 points of the set went to the home team in the win. Boncaro had a pair of aces during the scoring run.

The second set was much more competitive after the teams were tied at 11 all. Johnson-Kuhao Ho'okano-Pelekai was the spark the offense needed to go on a 14-4 run to close the second at 25-15. The Thunder had 19 kills on 33 attacks in the set with just four errors.

Hofmeister rattled off three points in the midst of a 6-1 run to begin the third and helped sink Olivet for the night. The Comets got back to within two at 12-10, but nine of the final ten points went to the Trine en route to the 25-14 match-clinching victory. Liam Northrup and Ethan McLenon were late-game additions to the scoring column.

Saturday, March 30 will mark senior day for the 2024 graduating class prior to the team's match against Adrian College. The ceremony will begin at 11:55 a.m. followed by first serve at 12 p.m.
