COLDWATER, MI – A Coldwater man is facing charges related to a fire at his house this summer.
Branch County District Court officials say that 58 year old Anthony Stanton is charged with second degree arson following an investigation by the Coldwater Police into a fire that happened at Stanton’s home on July 4. In addition, a fourth offense habitual offender sentencing enhancer was also filed.
The Coldwater Fire Department was called to the 100 East Pierce Street at 7 AM on that date. They found smoke and flames coming from a second story window on the south side of the house. The fire was in a bathroom and put out in 15 minutes.
Stanton was taken to ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital, and currently is being treated at the V.A. Hospital in Battle Creek.
Online court documents reveal that Coldwater Police questioned Stanton, who allegedly used a cigarette to start a liquid on fire. He watched it and then tried to put the fire out but failed.
Damage to the house and contents is estimated at just over $26,000.
During his arraignment, Stanton’s bond was set at $5,000. He is scheduled to have a probable cause hearing on September 19.
