(LANSING) - A long-running dispute over the Michigan-Indiana state line is closer to resolution after lawmakers gave final approval to legislation Tuesday, sending the bill to Governor Gretchen Whitmer for her signature.

Senate Bill 595, authored by State Sen. Jonathan Lindsey of Coldwater, passed its final hurdle with a concurrence vote in the Michigan Senate. The measure is designed to settle decades of uncertainty along the border that have led to property disputes, enforcement challenges, and environmental management issues.

The legislation changes how the border will be officially surveyed, allowing individual counties to map their own sections rather than relying on a single statewide contractor--a key obstacle that stalled past efforts. It also extends the timeline for completing the work.

Supporters say the update offers a practical path forward without forcing the state to restart the lengthy certification process. If signed into law, the bill would move Michigan and Indiana closer to a clearly defined and legally recognized boundary.
