FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WLKI)- The YWCA of Northeast Indiana will hold a Flowers on the River event Tuesday evening to honor survivors of domestic violence and remember those who have died.
The event begins at 6 p.m. on the Wells Street Bridge in Promenade Park, located at 202 West Superior Street.
YWCA representatives will drop purple carnations into the St. Marys River. The program will also include a moment of silence and a mayoral proclamation.
The organization is encouraging residents to wear purple each Friday throughout October in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
YWCA of Northeast Indiana CEO Paula Hughes-Schuh said the organization's crisis shelter at 1313 West Washington Center Road is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for people experiencing domestic abuse.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than one in three women and more than one in six men have experienced contact sexual violence, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime.
The YWCA will also host its Circle fundraiser on Oct. 29 at the Parkview Mirro Center. Hughes-Schuh is expected to share her personal experience alongside other Fort Wayne women affected by domestic violence.
According to YWCA Northeast Indiana, information about upcoming events and ways to support its services is available through the organization's website.
