ANGOLA, Ind. (WLKI)- The City of Angola is wrapping up another busy construction and maintenance season, with street improvements, water system upgrades and wastewater projects completed or continuing into the fall.
In an October community message, Mayor Dave Martin said the city completed several street overlay projects as well as sidewalk replacement and repair work throughout the community.
Among the most visible projects was the replacement of a deteriorating sidewalk along the west side of the first block of South Wayne Street. The city also hopes to replace a retaining wall on the first block of West Gale Street before the construction season ends.
Martin said Angola has historically relied on Indiana's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program to help pay for significant roadway work, including improvements to street surfaces, road bases, curbs and sidewalks.
However, the city saw a major reduction in available funding this year. Angola had about $1.5 million available through the program in 2025, compared with less than $300,000 this year.
The city used this year's Community Crossings funding to rebuild Shawnee Drive. Martin said officials will continue working to restore future funding closer to the levels Angola has received in past years.
Water and wastewater crews also remain active on the Pokagon water and sewer extension project. The Potawatomi Inn is now receiving drinking water through the City of Angola system, and construction will continue as weather permits.
The Water Department completed maintenance and cosmetic improvements at two city water towers and installed new shutoff valves across the community. The valves are intended to give crews more flexibility when isolating sections of the system for repairs and maintenance.
Meanwhile, the Wastewater Department is rehabilitating several pumping stations and recently completed major work at the wastewater treatment plant, including replacement of a material holding tank critical to plant operations.
The city's Parks Department also celebrated the first full year of Sheets Family Park. According to Martin, maintenance and operating costs have remained in line with what was budgeted, and the park has become a popular destination for residents and visitors.
Angola residents are also being reminded that bulk collection is scheduled for October 21st and 22nd. Leaf pickup is expected to begin in mid-October, weather permitting.
According to Mayor Dave Martin's October community message, city employees' work across multiple departments remains essential to maintaining the services and infrastructure residents rely on.
