ANGOLA, Ind. (WLKI)- Angola has received national recognition after being selected as Indiana's most charming small town by the travel publication AFAR.

According to AFAR, Angola stood out for its combination of outdoor recreation, local attractions and small-town character.

The publication highlighted the city's proximity to Crooked Lake, Lake James and Pokagon State Park. Each destination is located within approximately a 15-minute drive of Angola.

AFAR described the surrounding area as a popular location for kayaking and fishing. Pokagon State Park also provides visitors with access to hiking trails, beaches and other seasonal outdoor activities.

The publication credited Trine University with contributing to an active social environment within the community.

Angola's downtown attractions also factored into the selection. AFAR recommended browsing the antique shops located along historic Maumee Street.

The publication also suggested visiting Buck Lake Bar and Grill for burgers, wings and drinks.

Angola was selected as part of AFAR's nationwide list recognizing one charming small town in each state.

Other communities featured on the list include Frankenmuth, Michigan; Galena, Illinois; Sanibel, Florida; and Taos, New Mexico.

The complete list of towns is available through AFAR's website.
