(LANSING) - The annual "Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over" campaign is underway.
The Michigan State Police along with local law enforcement agencies are expanding road patrols across the State to crack down on impaired drivers, now through Labor Day.
The campaign will target motorists who are operating under the influence of alcohol, marijuana, prescription medications and any other illegal drugs. Officers say they will be looking for drivers who are varying their speed or weaving in their lane.
State data shows in Michigan between 2021 and 2025, there were 46 driver fatalities during the Labor Day holiday weekend. Just over 39% of those killed involved drug or alcohol impairment.
The "Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over" campaign is administered by the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, and uses dedicated Federal traffic safety funds to have extra officers on the road in addition to regular daily patrols.
It's illegal in Michigan to drive with a blood alcohol level of .08% or higher. However, officers can make an arrest at any blood alcohol level if they see a driver displaying signs of impairment.
Authorities are urging the public to avoid life-altering consequences by coordinating a designated sober driver, arranging a safe alternative ride home or utilizing a rideshare service before any late-summer celebrations begin.
