DEKALB COUNTY, Ind. (WLKI) - Indiana State Police are reminding motorists that driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal and poses a serious risk to everyone on the road.
The safety message follows a recent traffic stop on Interstate 69 in DeKalb County in which a commercial truck driver was arrested on preliminary operating while intoxicated charges after troopers observed unsafe driving behavior. During the investigation, police also located suspected marijuana inside the truck's cab.
While the case remains under investigation, Indiana State Police said the incident underscores the dangers of impaired driving, particularly when large commercial vehicles are involved.
"Driving high is always illegal," the agency said, emphasizing that marijuana impairment can affect a driver's reaction time, judgment and ability to safely operate a vehicle. State police noted that operating a semi-tractor trailer while impaired is especially concerning because of the size and weight of commercial vehicles and the potential for catastrophic crashes.
Indiana State Police said troopers will continue proactive patrols aimed at identifying and removing impaired drivers from Indiana highways, regardless of whether the impairment is caused by marijuana, alcohol or another intoxicating substance.
Officials are encouraging motorists to make safe choices by never driving while impaired and to arrange for a sober ride if they have used marijuana or any other substance that affects their ability to drive safely.
The arrest referenced in the investigation is based on probable cause.
All charges are allegations, and the suspect is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
