(LANSING) - Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel's office is urging residents to use caution when hiring contractors for summer home improvement projects.

State officials say warmer weather often brings an increase in complaints involving contractors who use high-pressure sales tactics, perform poor-quality work, overcharge customers or create confusion over contract terms. Some homeowners have also reported threats of property liens from dishonest workers.

The Attorney General's Office advises residents to avoid "now or never" sales offers and to verify that contractors are properly licensed and insured before hiring them.

Homeowners are encouraged to obtain at least two or three written estimates, check references and review any complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau. Officials also recommend carefully reading all contract terms before signing.

The state advises consumers to make payments in stages as work is completed rather than paying the full amount upfront.

Residents who have disputes with licensed contractors can file a complaint with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. Complaints involving unlicensed workers can be submitted to the state's Consumer Protection Team.
