(ANGOLA) – The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF-1 tornado moved through portions of LaGrange and Steuben counties late Thursday night, producing damage from southeast LaGrange County to just north of Angola.

Survey teams determined the tornado developed within a line of severe thunderstorms and produced peak winds of about 90 miles per hour.

The tornado began in extreme southeast LaGrange County near Taylor Lake and Lake of the Woods, where investigators found damage to electrical poles and significant tree damage. The storm then tracked northeast into Steuben County before turning more easterly and impacting portions of western and northern Angola.

The tornado's path stretched approximately 15 miles from an area east of Wolcottville to just north of Angola.

Warning sirens were activated in both counties as the storm moved through the area.

Much of the damage along the tornado's path was concentrated in trees. The Holicki Eye Center sign on North Wayne Street was also snapped off at its base. Additional damage was reported in the Howe area, where numerous trees were damaged.

The tornado was one of several confirmed across Indiana during Thursday night's severe weather outbreak.

The storms also caused widespread power outages across northeast Indiana. NIPSCO reported nearly 62,000 customers without power following the storms, while LaGrange County REMC reported about 1,500 outages and Steuben County REMC reported about 2,000 outages.

No fatalities or serious injuries were reported in connection with the tornado.
