(LANSING) - Emergency room visits for tick bites are climbing nationwide, and Michigan is seeing a sharp increase in Lyme disease cases.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says ER visits for tick bites have exceeded the same period over the past decade for three straight weeks.

Michigan reported 3,380 Lyme disease cases last year, up from 1,969 the year before and more than triple the total from 2022.

So far in 2026, the state has already confirmed 250 cases.

Health officials say the increase comes as more people spend time outdoors in wooded and grassy areas during warmer weather.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says ticks are active when temperatures reach 40 degrees or higher and recommends avoiding high grass and brush, using insect repellent, and checking clothing and skin after being outside.

Officials say ticks often attach in areas like the scalp, armpits, and groin.

If a tick is found, it should be removed with fine-tipped tweezers by pulling straight out, then cleaning the area.

Officials say ticks typically must be attached for more than 24 hours to transmit infection.

Early symptoms of Lyme disease include a rash and flu-like illness, with more serious complications developing later if untreated.

State health officials also offer free tick identification through local health departments.
