(INDIANA) - The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is warning drivers to check their vehicles for the invasive spotted lanternfly before leaving affected areas.

Officials say the insect is spreading across Indiana by hitching rides on cars, trucks and other equipment. The spotted lanternfly has been found on semi-trucks, construction equipment, recreational vehicles and even railroad cars.

Egg masses can be difficult to detect, allowing the insect to travel unnoticed and establish in new areas.

The DNR is urging residents to inspect vehicles and equipment carefully and report any suspected sightings to the agency.
