(INDIANAPOLIS) -- Indiana officials say a new agreement will help improve how veterans receive assistance across the state.

The Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs and the American Legion Department of Indiana have signed a partnership focused on training County Veteran Service Officers, the local officials who help veterans apply for benefits and navigate federal and state programs.

Under the agreement, the American Legion will help provide Veterans Affairs accreditation to service officers who complete new training standards established by the Indiana Veterans Commission.

State officials say the goal is to make sure every county has trained representatives who can properly guide veterans through benefit programs and claims.

Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs Director Jake Adams says improving training for service officers strengthens the entire system that supports veterans and their families.

American Legion leaders say the partnership is intended to ensure veterans across Indiana receive consistent, qualified assistance when seeking benefits and services.
