(ASHLEY) - First responders from across northeast Indiana are invited to take part in a specialized autism awareness training this weekend aimed at improving emergency response and building trust within the community.

The training will take place Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to noon at the Ashley-Hudson Volunteer Fire Department, located at 101 S. Union Ave. in Ashley.

The session is being presented by the Autism Society of Indiana and is designed specifically for first responders, including firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMTs and other emergency personnel.

According to organizers, the training will focus on helping responders better recognize the signs of autism, understand sensory needs, apply de-escalation techniques and improve communication during emergency situations. The goal is to reduce misunderstandings and improve outcomes when first responders interact with individuals on the autism spectrum.

The program will be led by Rachel Deaton, director of training and legislation for the Autism Society of Indiana.

Organizers say the training is especially important as first responders are often the first point of contact during high-stress situations where sensory overload or communication barriers can escalate an incident.

The event is open to first responders and emergency personnel, and no cost was listed for attendance.
