(SHIPSHEWANA) - The Shipshewana Town Council accepted the resignation of Town Marshal Carlos Jasso during its meeting Wednesday night, following the filing of a felony charge against him earlier this week.

Jasso, 49, is facing a Level 6 felony charge of intimidation in LaGrange Circuit Court. He has been suspended from the Shipshewana Police Department for approximately six months while the Indiana State Police investigated an alleged domestic battery incident. If convicted, Jasso could face up to two and a half years in jail. A pretrial conference is scheduled for Feb. 23.

Jasso had served as town marshal since January 2023 and began working for the department in 2004.

During the meeting, Town Council President Christine Yoder thanked Officers Nick Byroad and Brandon Hooley for their work in maintaining department operations during Jasso's suspension.

"We appreciate everything you guys have done for us and what you have done for the town," Yoder said.

The council also swore in Jason Peters as a new deputy marshal. Peters was recommended for the position by Byroad.

With Jasso's resignation finalized, the town council approved posting the marshal position as it begins the search for a new chief law enforcement officer.
